Christmas Market Tour

This is an extraordinary Christmas tour. We have created a very special and leisurely holiday journey for those who want more than just the average Tour Bus Christmas Market Tour. After spending the first night in the small medieval town of Erding near Munich's airport it is on to the famous Bavarian resort town of Garmisch Partenkirchen for two days. From Garmisch you travel to Salzburg in Austria for a two night stay at the 5-star Hotel Bristol in the heart of the city which is followed by two very special days in the old city of Steyr, Austria's "Christmas Town".  From there drive through one of the most scenic regions of Austria to Oberalm to stay in the Castle Haunsperg as guests of the owners Eike and Georg von Gernerth. From the Castle Haunsperg a drive through the Austrian and Bavarian Alps takes you to the Villa Jaegerhof at the foot of the famous Neuschwanstein Castle and then back to Munich for another overnight stay in Erding before your return flight. Wonderful hotels, fabulous scenery, fine food and of course, the Christmas Markets make this a unique and out-of-the-ordinary tour. 

 

Itinerary
Nov. 28 - Depart USA for your flight to Munich in Germany.

Nov. 29 - Arrive in Munich to spend the first night in the medieval town of Erding where you will meet your Posh Journeys hosts.  After arrival transfer to the delightful small town of Erding. Depending when you arrive there may be time to take a stroll through Erding after checking in. Your Posh Journeys hosts will point you in the right direction. It is but a five minute walk to the center of town.  In the evening we have dinner is in the former watchman's quarters above the medieval town gate which is  now a wonderful intimate restaurant.  D

Nov. 30   -After breakfast drive  to the resort of Garmisch Partenkirchen. Your hotel here is an elegant and charming Bavarian Chalet within a short walk of Garmisch's festively decorated pedestrian mall. For dinner tonight very old Bavarian  brewery restaurant. B D

Dec. 1  -  This morning take an excursion to the village of Wallgau with its ornately painted 16th century houses where you will enjoy a sleigh ride or wagon ride depending on the snow conditions.  In the evening have dinner  is in a locally famous inn in Partenkirchen. B D

Dec. 2  -  Although you may be reluctant to leave Garmisch  your travels today will take you to Salzburg. The drive will take you on a scenic route via Innsbruck where we make a stop to visit the Christmas Market.  Your hotel in Salzburg is the 5-star Hotel Bristol at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg, a mountain topped by a Baroque Monastery and only a few minutes walk away from Salzburg's Old Town with is large Christmas Market.  For the remainder of the day you may want to shopping and pursue other  interests. Dinner is in a local inn. B D

Dec. 3  -  The day free for more shopping and to pursue your own interests. You may want to take the funicular to the Hohensalzburg Fortress or visit the house where Mozart was born, or the beautiful Baroque Residence Museum.  B

Dec. 4 - After breakfast bid Salzburg farewell to drive to the 1000-year old city of Steyr about halfway between Salzburg and Vienna. Here you will  stay two nights in a charming inn set on the banks of the Steyr river facing the old town. After arrival join the night watchman who will take you on a stroll through the narrow lanes of Steyr's old city center with its stately Patrician houses and its beautiful Baroque town square where the Christmas Market is set up.  Afterwards there is time to go shopping on your own or relax a while before a dinner of upper Austrian cuisine in the hotel's wonderful dining room overlooking the roofs and spires of Steyr. B D

Dec. 5 - A special day is in store for you. First on the itinerary is a visit to the Christkindl Post Office where you can mail all your Christmas cards with a special "Christkindl" stamp from Steyr. Afterwards visit the Steyr Museum with its collection of Baroque and Biedermeier nativity scenes. The afternoon is free to shop at the Christmas Market where a local band Christmas gives a Chrismas concert at four each afternoon.  Dinner is in the historic Floesserstube of the  hotel.  B D

Dec. 6 - After breakfast a scenic drive through the lake region of the Salzkammergut will bring you to your next destination, the romantic 14th century Castle  Haunsperg. After arrival enjoy a glass of wine with your delightful  hosts Eike and George von Gernerth, and yes you'll also get to meet the Oscar the dog. Later a dinner in the castle of typical Austrian fare will conclude the day. B D

Dec. 7  -  This morning you enjoy an excursion to the Koenigsee, one of Bavaria's most stunning lakes. The fjord-like lake is bordered on all sides by steep mountains and is one of the deepest alpine lakes. Take a cruise on a lake steamer to Bartholome where the former hunting lodge of  the Bavarian Kings is now a congenial place to pause for refreshments.. On our return to the castle we will make a stop for a stroll through the scenic small town of Berchtesgaden.  Should the weather not cooperate visit the historic salt mines of Berchtesgaden instead of going to the lake. Dinner this evening is in a nearby local restaurant. B D

Dec. 8  -  After a leisurely breakfast drive through the Austrian and Bavarian Alps to the Castle Neuschwanstein  where you will overnight in the luxurious Villa Jaegerhaus, the former hunting lodge of the Bavarian Royal family. In the evening enjoy a special  holiday dinner in the candlelit dining room of the adjacent Hotel Lisl from where you have a view of the lighted castles.  BD

Dec. 9  - After breakfast take a horse-drawn carriage to the Castle Neuschwanstein for a tour of the castle. Later return to Erding for another overnight stay.  A casual dinner of Bavarian Weisswurst and a stein of the famous local Weissbier at the 500-year old Erdinger Brauerei Restaurant will conclude the day. B

Dec. 10  - Transfer to the airport for your return flight.

INCLUDED:  11-nights deluxe and first class accommodation, daily breakfast, daily dinner except on Dec. 3, all transportation in a deluxe coach, entry fees for sightseeing as per itinerary, all tips for meals and to the bus driver, and the services of your  Posh Journeys hosts.

NOT INCLUDED:  Air fare,  additional food and drink, alcoholic beverages with meals unless they are a part of a featured meal, **airport transfers and any personal item not specifically mentioned in this itinerary.

** AIRPORT TRANSFERS - Since participants will come in at different times during the day airport transfers are on your own, but we will arrange transfers on the hotel bus where someone will meet you when you come out of customs. The fare per person is about $10.
